While
this evening went much smoother than the first one I spent in Casualty, my time
there gives me such a strong appreciation for the healthcare we receive in
America. I am grateful for the appreciation and worth of human life we see in
the States. It was nearly two in the morning when we finally got to bed and we
had planned an early morning at an orphanage/school for Friday morning.
To my friends and family: We have been planning this trip for many months now and the time is finally here. Our group will spend the first few days in Frankfurt, Germany more or less just for fun! We will then travel to Mombasa, Kenya where the real work begins. We will volunteer in the local hospital as well as spend many hours with the children of the orphanage in Mombasa. I will do my best to post at least once a day to keep you up to date on happenings and pictures. I hope you enjoy!

Thursday Night - Casualty
We did go back to the hospital around 9 pm to help out in
Casualty. Thankfully it was a slower evening than the last time I had been
there. There were three patients who all came in at relatively the same time.
One had a sprained elbow and possibly a fractured pelvis. Another had a broken
leg. Yet another had a severe head wound. While we were working to get everyone
through X-Ray, the patients started to recognize one another. They had been in
the same accident. Having been on the streets of Mombasa, I was well aware that
accidents are probable and rather dangerous. However, it is usually a motorbike
or a pedestrian traffic accident. We found out that these three particular
patients had been traveling on a 47-passenger bus. Even though it took a while,
they were all eventually seen by a physician and admitted to wards.
